From Glen Nevis it’s on to Inverlochy Castle, which was constructed in the 1200s. Our next scheduled stop is at the Glenfinnan Monument. Next our tour will take us past Lochailort & Glenuig before reaching the 13th century Castle Tioram.

After a brief stop it’s on to the shores of Loch Sunart and through the stunningly rugged scenery of Glen Tarbert. Leaving Ardgour we will follow the western coastline of Loch Linnhe, then Loch Eil. Views of Ben Nevis and Fort William from across Loch Linnhe are excellent. From Kinlocheil it’s on to Fort William.

Inverlochy Castle

Inverlochy CastleInverlochy Castle is located on the banks of the River Lochy. It is often referred to as Old Inverlochy Castle not to confuse it with the 5 star Country House Hotel of the same name several miles North at Torlundy.

The Comyns of Badenoch constructed the Castle in the 13th century. Through the centuries it changed hands on several occasions either by bestowal or by force. At the beginning of the 14th Century Robert the Bruce took control of the castle, thereafter handing it over to loyal supporters. Although the castle is quite clearly a ruin, there is however a lot of the structure intact including the 30 feet high curtain walls.

Glenfinnan

GlenfinnanOur first scheduled stop is at the National Trust for Scotland Visitors Centre located in Glenfinnan. Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale erected the Glenfinnan Monument in 1815. The monument stands as a tribute to the clansmen who fought and gave their lives in the cause of the Stuarts during Bonnie Prince Charlie’s campaign of 1745.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct that was used in the Harry Potter films by the Hogwarts Express steam train can be seen in the distance to the rear of the visitors centre. The viaduct spans 1000 feet. At its highest the 21 Arch structure is one hundred feet above the valley floor. The engineer Sir Robert McAlpine started construction of this ambitious project in 1897.

Castle Tioram

Castle TioramCastle Tioram is located on the small rocky tidal island of Eilean Tioram (Gaelic for The Dry Island) on the shores of Loch Moidart. The castle was the former seat to the MacDonalds of Clan Ranald. The Castle curtain walls date back to the 1200s with further internal construction taking place over later centuries. The Castle was burned out in 1715 remaining unoccupied since then.

Unfortunatly the castle is closed and there are warning signs of loose masonry. It is possible, though to walk across to the island at low tide and get close enough to get good views of the exterior of the castle from a safe distance.
