Fort William

Copyright - Scottish Highland ToursThe Ben Nevis Distillery on the outskirts of town is open to visitors. A stop here can be incorporated into your itinerary upon request. Nearby the distillery we will cross the River Lochy and take the road up Locheilside.

Our first scheduled stop is at the National Trust for Scotland Visitors Centre located in Glenfinnan. Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale erected the Glenfinnan Monument in 1815. The monument stands as a tribute to the clansmen who fought and gave their lives in the cause of the Stuarts during Bonnie Prince Charlie’s campaign of 1745.

The Commando Memorial is to the officers and men of the commandos that died during the Second World War (1939-1945). This area was the training ground for these men.

Loch Ness

Copyright - Scottish Highland ToursIn Fort Augustus the impressive staircase of canal locks effectively allow vessels to bridge the different water levels between the Loch and the Canal by lifting or lowering them through a serious of locks. From Fort William to Muirtown Locks in Inverness is 60 miles by the way of the Caledonian Canal, 38 of these miles being through three fresh water lochs.

Just South of Drumnadrochit stand the ruins of Urquhart Castle.
Even today it’s a dominant looking fortress. Since Iron Age times there has been a stronghold on Strone Point. In1296 after the English were victorious at the battle of Dunbar, Edward 1st of England further fortified and extended the fortress into what is Castle Urquhart.

Inverness

Copyright - Scottish Highland ToursThe Highland Capital has an abundance of beautiful buildings. Many of those are Churches located along the banks of the River Ness, where Inverness Castle is also prominently located. The castle was built in 1835 on the sight of an earlier fortress.

These days the Sheriff Court is housed within the Castle. Only the drum tower is seasonally open to the public. There are excellent pedestrian pathways along the river edge partly through woodland plentiful with Scottish Pine trees. The pathways are within walking distance of the city centre.
