Glencoe Glencoe Village sits below the Pap of Glencoe. It’s a beautiful tranquil area that attracts visitors from all over the world for recreational pursuits ranging from mountain climbing to photography and a lot more besides. On the 13th of February 1692 it was a very different setting. Thirty-eight members of the clan Macdonald were cold bloodily murdered by their visitors. The murders took place in the early hours of the morning before daylight. Visiting Government troops mainly from the clan Campbell (who were sworn enemies of the Macdonald’s) had enjoyed the hospitality of their Macdonald hosts for a full two weeks prior to murdering them. Inveraray Inveraray sits on the shores of Loch Fyne. It’s very picturesque and steeped in history. Visually the main part of the towns has not changed significantly since its construction in the 1700s. In the centre of town you’ll find the 19th Century Jail, which is run as a prison museum since being restored in 1989. The Prison was in operation from 1820 till 1889. The Castle is home to the current Duke of Argyll. It’s open to the public. It offers a fascinating historical insight into life through the centuries. The castle plans were started in 1720, with completion of the project in 1789 for the 3rd Duke of Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell. Oban Oban is located on the West Coast. Its ferryboat services provide a web of vital links to many of the western isles.  McCaig’s Folly is a colosseum looking structure that sits dominantly on the cliffs above the town. A local banker named John Stewart McCaig began construction in 1897. He was anxious to ease unemployment in the area as well as giving his family name perpetuity by the way of this monument. The project was never finished and came to a stop following McCaig's death. Stevensons established the towns whisky distillery in 1794. It is open to the public. So if a wee dram of malt whisky appeals to you, why not pay the distillery a visit. Top of Page
